The global Smaato mobile advertising award was held yesterday in San Francisco. 15 finalists were up for awards spread over five categories. The finalists had been selected from a total of 250 nominees and numerous registrations.
iPhone category winner: Waze,

The Waze iphone app "Real-time maps and traffic information based on the wisdom of the crowd" allows drivers to build interactive street map and improve their journeys. Waze includes live traffic updates, such as cute ducks on the street!

The main trend at the event was 'Location'. Finalists Waze, Aloqa, Lucky Magazine (NearbyNow) and Yoose are all using geography as a key features. People use these apps to find local promotions, their way around town as well as keeping in touch with nearby friends.

"We've received entries from around the world and we are seeing really fresh ideas and great innovation in content and services. It's amazing to see the diversity and the brilliance of content in the mobile world."
The award winners will be offered free travel to and booth space at the Mobile World Congress 2010, which is held in Barcelona. Microsoft and Motorola sponsored additional prizes to their categories.
