Customers concern about the economy is contributing to an upturn of coupons in general. Research in the US shows that 67% are now more likely to look out for promotions in comparison to last year, and we are seeing a similar pattern in the UK.

Mobile coupons are in particular on the rise and Juniper Research forecast a 30% increase by 2010. Companies, who are competing for the increased promotionally response, are inclined to use mobile coupons because of their potential to save money.

Dominos Pizza launched a mobile coupon program service it nationwide franchises earlier this month and Bristol International Airport started promoting its Tax and Duty Free store via mobile coupons in January.

Mobile coupons are much better at targeting customers with tailored promotions that match their exact interest and preferences, and whereas companies used to print "one coupon for everyone", coupons sent via to mobile phones reduce the wastage and make campaigns much more effective.

Howard Wilcox at Juniper Research says "Considering that mobile coupons offer much better redemption rates and are more cost effective, they represent a winwin approach for innovative retailers."

In addition, mobile coupons save paper and are more ecological sound as oppose to printed coupons.
